Characters in Lust for Freelance Sonja Experiencing the tragic loss of sanity of her people, she is on a quest to find out what happened and if she can help. Her family are shepards and she has had the role of protecting the sheep from harm, mostly including bears and wolves, therefore she is fearless when it comes to natural predators, but a bit unsocialised and naive about getting taken advantage of or major politics. To respond to her village's disaster, she sends letters to major capitals, getting a response from Lowe, a lower level beaurocrat in the demon capital city. She responds to Lowe's form-letter response by leaving her home to go on a quest to meet Lowe (who has no clue how to help her). (birthday May 19th) major flaws: She has a blind spot to Mohei's selfishness because she is happy to have someone who has joined her quest. She avoids and ignores pain, tending to put a happy face to almost everything. She also trusts far too easily and thinks that she and Mohei make a good team because he mistrusts everything. She doesn't think that anger or sorrow is worth anything because happiness has made her strong. Arc: She will have to come to terms with the fact that she is in denial. She will have to get angry. She has to stop suppressing memories of her family. Mohei A very old demon who has suffered a recent memory loss. The first thing he remembers is waking up from being drunk at a house in a dwarf town on the border of demon land. The person running the house is a religious leader who saw Mohei's obivous naivete and felt compelled to instill discipline on Mohei. After three years of stagnating in that town, Mohei meets Sonja, who convinces him (very easily) to join her quest. Flaws: Very childlike and uninterested in anything other than his own survival and needs. He needs very much to belong, and Sonja fills that need almost immediately. Arc: Starts to notice that he is hurting others, and that one side of him enjoys it. This freaks him out. He regains his memories (?) and remembers Freg pulling off the ultimate sacrifice for him. He reunites with Freg and takes a bullet for him in return. Problems (plot holes): How does he get his memories back? Freg knows how to do it but won't. Why would he want his memories back? Perhaps Sonja discovers that he might know something. Lowe Lowe tries to keep his head down and keep his job as a low level military beaurocrat until he starts receiving visits from a mysterious stranger who pressures him into "losing" some documents here and there. After a lifetime on the receiving end of casual racism for being half demon, he is apathetic and pessimistic, and does not mind being an informant if the situation is safe enough. Flaws: He doesn't believe in there being a right thing - he is overly pessimistic. Arc: He falls desperately and completely in love with Sonja and overcomes his pessimism and apathy to see love in others and protect it at all costs. Freg A deeply cynical magical scientist who gradually falls for rock-headed Mohei. His day job is work in the imperial court of the Elves as the scientific advisor. His night job is as an assassin for hire. He is personally interested in studying the powerful magic of the demons, but over the course of investigating its properties he realises it comes from an unsustainable source - the marrow from a living body. Flaws: No flaws. Freg is perfect and he knows it. Arc: Freg feels as though he did his one good deed in helping Mohei escape danger, so he can go back to business as usual. However, Regstaff is still after him, so he has to disguise and hide himself. This works out, because a war breaks out and he has to remain advisor to Kae in secret anyway. He is still very good at his job, but when he finds Mohei on quest with a secret elven agent, he tries to protect him from the shadows when he can. This makes him vulnerable, which ends up putting him in ultimate danger. Kae Regent of the Elves, who ends up leading after the emperor dies. War has been good to his people, causing them to question age-old beliefs. He sits back and sees his people face real consequences and death for the first time ever, and can't help but wonder if it is helping to change their stagnant culture. This is why he doesn't immediately seak a peaceful solution, even though he knows that the start to the war was staged by Mohei and Freg. He asks Freg to find him a spy so that he can make certain the conflict lasts for long enough to set in the new order. Freg manages to insinuate a dream connection with Homore. His meetings with Homore can't last long and happen mostly in their minds, but it results in a bond that feels real and dangerous to both of them. Homore manages to convince Kae that war is wrong and to try to investigate what caused the war. Flaws: He puts a lot of pressure on himself to find solutions to the big picture. He harbors a deep grudge against Freg. Arc: He attains peace for his people at the expense of Homore. A thousand years later, he lives with Homore in an apartment in Canada somewhere, eh? Homore A non-genious who for some reason is in charge of the demon military. He is pretty much a figurehead, and the four generals of the demon military are in charge. He knows he doesn't know enough to make any decisions, and everyone understands he is just a figurehead. Still, he tries his best to understand military decisions and genuinely cares that mistakes that generals make can be felt by real people. He takes it upon himself to find the root cause of the conflict, which is how he finds Kae. Kae is too captivating not to fall for, though. Flaws: youth and inexperience Arc: He Demon King He consults with Homore as part of the war effort. He is a ruler that is chosen through lottery, however. So he does the best he can and believes in the system, and believes the demon propaganda that the war with the elves is a war against cultural suppresors. Regstaff His wife was the greatest mage of all time. They married when he was relatively young, so she was his first love. She taught him that nothing was impossible if thought could capture it. He had relatively no interests before meeting her, but experimented in automation and golems. His created an arti Veris The greatest mage of all time. She experimented with mixing magic with prayer and religion. She had many other lovers, and discovered that she was the most powerful when a cult-like devotion was the focus point for magic. She also discovered that humans were the best magic vessels in comparison to dwarves, elves, and demons. She studied the relative longevity of elves and demons and was interested in living longer herself. This brought her life to an end. Not all that tragic. However, she did seem to
